Everything Downstream Depends on the Pump Room

Sprinkler heads, hydrant landing valves and hose reels are only as good as the water supply behind them. On a pumped system, that supply is a pumpset, a controller, a stored water volume and a length of suction and discharge pipework that has to perform on demand, first time, after months of sitting idle. Safe QLD holds the whole of that supply under one contract, from the tank inlet through to the furthest hydrant on the ring main.

With over 60 years experience and a complete in house team of industry experts and technicians, we design, install, certify and maintain fire protection assets across South East Queensland. Pump work sits right in the middle of that capability, because it demands mechanical, hydraulic and electrical skills in the same room at the same time. Our in house specialist electrical contractors handle controllers, supply and monitoring, while our fire technicians handle the hydraulics, so nothing waits on a third party.

A fire pump that will not start is a total loss of water supply, and the failure is almost never the pump itself. It is a flat battery bank, a stale fuel load, a drifting pressure switch, a controller left in manual after a contractor visit, or a suction valve strapped shut and never reopened. Our routines are built to find those things before the fire does.

  • Duty, standby and jockey pump inspection, run testing and rectification

What an AS 1851 Pump Test Actually Involves

Plenty of contractors tick a box that says the pump ran. A real performance test proves the pumpset still meets the duty it was designed and certified to deliver, and produces the numbers to show it.

  • Churn test. The pump is started on a genuine pressure drop signal and run at zero flow with the discharge closed. We record start pressure, no-flow shut-off pressure, speed, running temperatures, run time and that the pump does not stop early.
  • Flow and pressure verification. Water is passed through a test line or flow meter and readings are taken across the curve, then plotted against the design duty point and the original commissioning figures to reveal wear, cavitation, blockage or a failing supply.
  • Suction condition. Suction pressure and tank draw-down are watched under flow, so a pump that performs on paper but starves in practice is picked up.
  • Alarm and fault signalling. Pump running, pump fail to start, mains fail, controller off auto, low tank level and low pressure signals are proved through to the fire indicator panel and to the monitoring service.
  • Restoration. Valves reopened and strapped, controller returned to auto, pressures restored, tank refilled and the system confirmed back in full service.

AS 1851-2012 sets routine servicing intervals for fire pumpsets and the water supplies that feed them. The exact schedule for your site depends on the system type, the original design and any insurer requirements, and we confirm it against your baseline data before the first visit.

Stored water is the part of the system nobody looks inside until the five-yearly comes around, and it is where we routinely find sediment, corrosion, failed level devices and refill valves that stopped working years ago. A tank that reads full on the panel and is half full in reality is a compliance failure and a firefighting failure at the same time.

Fire Pump & Water Storage FAQs

How often does a fire pump need to be tested?
Under AS 1851-2012 a fire pumpset is run and inspected on a monthly routine, with more detailed six-monthly and yearly routines and a comprehensive five-yearly service. The yearly routine includes a flow and pressure performance test against the pump's design duty. Many insurers and system designs also call for a weekly run, which Safe QLD can either attend or set your site staff up to record, with our technicians auditing the log at each visit.
What is a churn test on a fire pump?
A churn test runs the pump at zero flow with the discharge valve closed, so we can verify it starts on the correct pressure signal, reaches rated speed, produces its no-flow shut-off pressure and runs without overheating. We record start pressure, running pressure, speed, temperatures and run time, and confirm the pump does not stop before its designed run period. Churn proves the pump starts and runs, the yearly flow test proves it still performs.
Do you service diesel fire pumps as well as electric?
Yes. Safe QLD services both electric motor driven and diesel engine driven pumpsets. Diesel work covers engine oil and coolant, fuel quality, tank level and fuel line and filter condition, exhaust and cooling loops, dual battery banks, chargers and charge rates, and the auto-start, start attempt and changeover sequences in the controller. Our in house specialist electrical contractors look after the controller, supply and monitoring side, so the mechanical and electrical work happens on the same visit.
How often should a fire water storage tank be inspected and cleaned?
Tanks are checked on the routine service schedule for water level, level indication and low level alarm signalling, automatic refill operation, screens, vents, access and structural or coating condition. Internal inspection and cleaning is carried out on the long interval routines, or sooner where sediment, corrosion or contamination is found. The tank is always returned to its full stored volume and the level signal reproved before we leave site.
Can you replace or upgrade an existing fire pumpset?
Yes, and we treat it as a full project: design and engineering, drafting and planning, project management and QA, specialist installation and programming, methodical commissioning, then ongoing service and maintenance, all delivered by in house teams. We plan staged isolations, agree interim protection measures in writing and work out of hours where the building needs to keep trading, then hand over commissioning data that becomes the baseline for future testing.
What happens if the pump fails its performance test?
You get the numbers, the likely cause and a priced path back to compliance, not just a fail on a report. Shortfalls usually trace back to wear in the pump, a restricted or partly closed suction, a failing driver, a controller setting or a water supply that no longer delivers what the design assumed. We report the defect with the test data attached, quote the rectification, and where the system is left impaired we agree interim measures with you and the Queensland Fire Department requirements in mind.
